In a collaborative effort known as the ESCAPE project, researchers have conducted a comprehensive cross-study on juvenile justice systems in four European countries: Turkey, Spain, Italy, and Romania. The findings shed light on the unique challenges and commitments within these nations’ prison systems, particularly concerning spiritual counselling and rehabilitation efforts for young offenders.
Turkiye:
Turkiye emerges as a pioneer in recognizing the distinct needs of juvenile offenders, with significant strides made towards establishing a separate justice system for children. Despite commendable reforms in line with international conventions, challenges such as overcrowding and insufficient staff training persist, potentially impeding effective rehabilitation efforts.
Spain:
In Spain, a steady influx of juvenile offenders underscores the importance of re-education and social skill development programs. However, addressing drug use among minors and providing support for at-risk families remain pressing challenges, requiring tailored interventions to ensure positive outcomes for young offenders.
Italy:
Overcrowding poses a significant obstacle to rehabilitation efforts within Italy’s prison system, exacerbating issues such as drug addiction among inmates and disruptions in educational programs, further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The shortage of administrative and social services staff adds to the complexity of the situation, highlighting the need for comprehensive reforms to enhance rehabilitation outcomes.
Romania:
Romania’s efforts to improve detention conditions prioritize human dignity and individualized accommodations, yet challenges persist in adapting programs to the diverse educational backgrounds of inmates, particularly young offenders. The scarcity of specialized programs further underscores the need for tailored interventions to support successful rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
Despite these challenges, each country demonstrates a firm commitment to social reintegration and rehabilitation through specialized programs in education, social work, and psychology. Collaborations with non-governmental organizations and volunteers play a crucial role in augmenting the effectiveness of these efforts.
