Work Package 2: Field Analysis

Project Summary

The main output of this work package is a Survey Report under two sections:

  1. 1. A comparative study that analyses European and National scenarios within the justice systems
  2. 2. Survey Analysis: Understanding the Impact of Spiritual Counseling

The results of WP2 significantly contributed to achieving the overall project objectives. The findings identified key training needs, strengths, and challenges in current practices, enabling the project to tailor future activities accordingly. Furthermore, the survey report serves as a scientific reference for external research, fostering long-term impact beyond the ESCAPE project.

Additionally, the collected data provided insights into policy gaps, resource constraints, and professional development needs, influencing recommendations for improved training and intervention strategies. The findings underscored the need for holistic rehabilitation approaches, reinforcing the project’s mission to support young prisoners’ reintegration into society. The research also emphasized the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration. Many professionals highlighted the need for better integration between spiritual counseling and other forms of rehabilitative support, such as psychological therapy and vocational training. This suggests a potential area for further development in future project phases.

Another important outcome was the recognition of cultural variations in spiritual counseling practices. While some countries have well-established frameworks for integrating spirituality into prison education, others lack formal structures. This finding suggests that policy recommendations should be tailored to reflect national contexts and institutional capabilities.

The success of WP2 also highlighted the value of knowledge-sharing and cross-border collaboration. By examining different national approaches, the project has created a valuable repository of best practices (WP3) that can be used to inform policy and practice in diverse settings. This contributes to the broader goal of enhancing the quality of prison education and reducing recidivism through improved psychosocial support.

The findings from WP2 have laid the groundwork for the next phases of the ESCAPE project, particularly in the development of training modules (WP4). The insights gathered will help ensure that future initiatives are evidence-based, culturally relevant, and aligned with the real needs of professionals working in the field.
